Pre-Dental

Dentists (DDS, DMD) evaluate, diagnose, prevent and/or treat oral diseases, disorders, or conditions. Dentists practice procedures such as fillings, crowns, implants, extractions, etc., and may perform general dental surgery or practice in a dental specialty. They also educate patients on how to care and maintain their oral health between visits.

Pre-Dental Course Requirements:
**Please note that dental school requirements can vary from school to school; research schools early for specific information on requirements.

  • Two semesters of biology with laboratories

  • Two semesters of general chemistry with laboratories

  • Two semesters of organic chemistry with laboratories

  • One semester of general physics with laboratory

  • Two semesters of English with emphasis on communications

  • One semester of microbiology

  • One semester of biochemistry

Shadowing, Volunteering, Involvement:
Similar to medical schools, dental programs are looking for well-rounded, creative, active, and motivated students. Remember that these opportunities will not substitute for poor academics, but keep a balanced approach at both.

  • Involvement:
  • Shadowing: Dentists work with a wide range of people in different settings. Shadowing allows you to see what the day-to-day work will look like.
  • Volunteering: Dental programs are looking for compassionate students who are looking to help people.

Dental School Entrance Exam and Application Process:
Students interested in dental school will need to take the DAT (Dental Admissions Test) around 18 months before starting dental school, with the application to their school of interest being around 12-15 months before entry date.

Dental Schools:

Dental Hygiene
Dental hygienists assist dentists in conducting cleanings and advising patients on proper oral care. They cannot perform operations or advanced procedures, but aid dentists in administering care. The University of Kentucky do not currently offer a dental hygiene program, however we encourage students interested in this field to consider options such as Bluegrass Community and Technical College's Dental Hygiene program.
