Cultural Heritage & Tourism Panel (A&S 100 class)
Cultural heritage is big business in Mexico, with profound implications for the nation’s economy, for the livelihoods and identities of descendant communities, and for the scholarly study and preservation of archaeological sites and materials. This panel will explore the economic, cultural and historical nexus of cultural heritage and tourism in a panel featuring Dr. Patricia McAnany, (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), and Drs. Sarah Lyon and Chris Pool of the Department of Anthropology at U.K.
Patricia A. McAnany is a Maya archaeologist who has conducted field research and cultural heritage programs through the Maya region. For more information on her work, you can visit the page www.in-herit.org
Sarah Lyon´s research interests include economic anthropology, tourism, globalization, agricultural production and commodity chains, sustainable consumption, Latin America, and Maya culture and identity.
Chris Pool´s research focuses primarily on the evolution of complex societies in the tropical lowlands of southern Veracruz, Mexico, including the Olmecs and their Epi-Olmec.

Day of Dead Ballet
Come watch this amazing performance that will follow a Mexican family as they celebrate the Day of the Dead in a small Mexican Village. The performance will include a Spanish-English presentation of the actual Holiday in Mexico. Tickets are available, free of charge, for students, faculty and staff at the Student Center Ticket office.

Day of the Dead Festival
Hosted by the Living Arts & Science Center. The Festival will show how Mexicans and various other cultures around the world remember and celebrate their passed families and friends. The festival will feature traditional Mexican musica, dancers, and a candle light parade.
Ven a celebrar el Día de los Muertos con Living Arts & Sciences Center. Durante el festival habrá música tradicional mexicana, bailes tradicionales, mucho color y una caminata a luz de candelas. Ven a recordar y celebrar a tu familia y amigos como lo hacen los mexicanos y otras culturas lationamericanas.
Altar Building Workshop
A short workshop on how to build an altar for Mexican Day of the Dead facilitated by Jacobo and Janice Aragon. Learn to make flowers, cut paper, and prepare an altar. Then we will be building various altars for UK, including one featured in the lobby of Patterson Office Tower.
Jacobo y Janice Argón darán un taller sobre como construir un altar típico del Día de los Muertos. Se enseñará como hacer flores de papel y diferentes diseños que suelen verse en los altares. Después del taller todos los participantes construirán varios altares que se mostrarán alrededor del campus, entre estos altares se encuentra el que estará en el lobby de Patterson Office Tower.
Day of Dead Slide Presentation
Adalhi Aranda Corn will give a presentation explaining the cultural and historical context of the Dia de los Muertos holiday. The presentation will also address the ballet "Dia de los Muertos: A Mexican Celebration of Life and Death," written by Corn for Lexington's Bluegrass Youth Ballet, to be performed on October 31st and November 1st at the Lexington Opera House. The slide show will be in English and Spanish.

Además, también dará información sobre el ballet: Día de los Muertos: Una Celebración Mexicana de Vida y Muerte” escrita por Corn y que será presentada por Lexington’s Bluegrass Youth Ballet este 31 de octubre y 1ro de noviembre en el Lexington Opera House. La presentación estará disponible en ingles y español.

Presented as part of the MUSE ( Museum Support to Educators) series, the Viva Mexico! workshop includes art, historical presentations, and displays of contemporary Mexican art, lesson sharing, cross-curricular ideas, resource materials, time to network with colleagues, a certificate for three professional development hours, refreshments, and lots of inspiration. The registration fee is non-refundable. Paid registrants who are unable to attend may request to receive the resource materials at no additional cost.
