UK Archaeologist Helps Unearth Hatfield and McCoy Artifacts
A notorious feud between the Hatfields of West Virginia and the McCoys of Kentucky is once again making national news, but this time it is hitting a little closer to home. A discovery of artifacts associated with patriarch Randall McCoy’s home and site of an infamous 1888 attack were confirmed by Kim McBride, a historic archaeologist with the Kentucky Archaeological Survey, a joint partnership with the University of Kentucky Department of Anthropology and the Kentucky Heritage Council/State Historic Preservation Office.
Charting Economic Terrain in Appalachia: Amanda Fickey
Amanda Fickey, a University of Kentucky doctoral candidate was recently granted a year long research fellowship by the Central Appalachian Institute in Research and Development. The Institute, located in Pikeville, Kentucky, focuses heavily on improving educational access and issues of economic development in the Central Appalachian region.

Her first two choices were Egypt and Syria, but both were deep in the throes of political unrest. Eventually, she landed in Amman, Jordan through Education Abroad at UK with AMIDEAST.

Sarah Elwood is Professor of Geography at the University of Washington. Her work intersects critical GIS, and urban and political geography, studying the social and political impacts of spatial technologies and the changing practices and politics of local activism, community organizing, and other modes of civic engagement. The New Mappings Collaboratory at the University of Kentucky hosted Professor Elwood while she and faculty at UK collaborate with new spatial media.
New Mappings Speaker Series: Daniel Sui
Dan Sui is Professor and Chair of Geography at The Ohio State University. His current research focuses on volunteered geographic information and the use of social media as a new data source for geographic research as well as the legal and ethical issues of using geospatial technologies in society. The New Mappings Collaboratory at the University of Kentucky hosted Professor Sui, kicking off an effort to build partnerships around new spatial media education and research.
