(Jan. 29, 2014) — The University of Kentucky ranked in the top 10 for Fulbright Scholar Awards received by its faculty in 2013-14. Many of the applicants were advised by David Adams, the former director of the East Asia/Pacific region for the Fulbright Program, whom the UK International Center (UKIC) brought to campus in 2012.
To continue this success, UKIC will bring two Fulbright consultants to UK this spring.
On Monday, Feb. 10, Dom Caristi, professor of telecommunications at Ball State University, will lead two workshops and meet privately with interested faculty to select an award and prepare an effective application. The workshop will take place in Study Room 1 of the Fine Arts Library. The itinerary is:
- 9–10:15 a.m., The Fulbright Program for Faculty – An Overview
- 10:30–11:45 a.m., Preparing Your Fulbright Application (For those who know the program and want to hear about how to tweak their applications)
- 1–3 p.m., Individual appointments
David Adams will return to campus Tuesday, March 25 and Wednesday, March 26, to conduct workshops and will also meet privately with interested applicants.
Dom Caristi was twice a Fulbright Scholar Award winner (Slovenia in 1995 and Greece in 2009) and is among a select group of former Fulbrighters chosen to serve as Alumni Ambassadors and represent Fulbright on college campuses and help faculty members successfully compete for awards.
David Adams was a senior staff member at the Fulbright Program for more than 20 years. During his tenure, he directed the East Asia, Pacific and South Asian regions.
"The University of Kentucky currently ranks in the top 10 among research institutions for the number of faculty Fulbright recipients," UK Provost Christine Riordan said, "Our hope is that these workshops will continue to build off of this great work and provide our faculty with more opportunities with the prestigious Fulbright Program."
The workshops will cover developing applications for the Fulbright Core and Specialist programs.
The Core Fulbright Scholar program sends 800 U.S. faculty and professionals abroad each year. Grantees lecture and conduct research in a wide variety of academic and professional fields. The 2015-16 competition opens Feb. 1, and closes Aug. 1.
The Fulbright Specialist Program is designed to provide short-term academic opportunities (two to six weeks) for U.S. faculty and professionals. Shorter grant lengths give specialists greater flexibility to pursue a grant that works best with their current academic or professional work. There is a rolling deadline for these competitions.
Alan Fryar, associate professor of earth and environmental sciences, was recently awarded a Fulbright for his research in Fez, Morocco,
“The Fulbright workshop I attended last year was really worthwhile,” Fryar said. “I gained insight into how the review panels work and personalized guidance about the organization and content of my application.”
